McVeigh Seeks Absentee Ballot to Vote in November

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Timothy McVeigh’s anti-government views didn’t stop him from registering to vote in next month’s presidential election.

McVeigh registered to vote again in the state where he was raised, New York, and election officials there mailed him an application for an absentee ballot on Monday.

“His seeking an absentee vote is not part of any strategy of the defense. It’s simply a right he’s exercising,″ his attorney, Stephen Jones, told the Daily Oklahoman Tuesday. “I don’t know who he’s going to vote for.″

McVeigh voted in 1992 as a Republican, but this time did not designate a party affiliation, said Niagara County, N.Y., Elections Board Commissioner Lucille Britt said.

“He’s not convicted of a felony. … and I cannot treat him any more differently than I can anybody else,″ said Ms. Britt, who mailed McVeigh the application.

McVeigh and Terry Nichols could face the death penalty if convicted of murder and conspiracy in the April 19, 1995, federal building explosion that killed 168 people and injured more than 500.

Nichols has not registered to vote in Colorado, where the federal prison housing him and McVeigh is located, or in Herington, Kan., where he was living when FBI agents arrested him.

Nichols used to be registered in Michigan, but renounced his right to vote in the state in 1992, calling the entire political system corrupt.
