The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said it simply: “Character is destiny.” Character shapes the destiny of an individual person. It shapes the destiny of a whole society. “Within the character of the citizen,” Cicero said, “lies the welfare of the nation.”
Transmitting values, in the words of the essayist Lance Morrow, is the work of civilization. A glance at history reminds us that civilizations do not flourish forever. They rise, and they fall. They fall when the moral core deteriorates – when a society fails to pass on its core virtues, its strengths of character, to the next generation. The historian Arnold Toynbee observed: “Out of 21 notable civilizations, 19 perished not by conquest from without but by moral decay from within.”
More than a century ago in a lecture at Harvard University, Ralph Waldo Emerson asserted, “Character is higher than intellect.” Writes the psychiatrist Frank Pittman: “The stability of our lives depends on our character. It is character, not passion, that keeps marriages together long enough to do their work of raising children into mature, responsible, productive citizens. In this imperfect world, it is character that enables people to survive, to endure, and to transcend their misfortunes.” “To do well,” Stephen Covey says, “you must do good. And to do good, you must first be good.”

What is Effective Character Education? By Thomas Lickona
Can schools, while they have students in their charge, make an observable difference in their character — the degree to which they know, love, and do the good? That question we can answer: Good schools, like good families, do make a difference. That is a source of hope as we face the formidable challenge of renewing our moral culture.

Character.org (formerly known as the Character Education Partnership) worked with educators, researchers, and experts to develop the 11 Principles of Effective Character Education. These guidelines can help improve your school climate and develop students of strong character – inspiring them to do well and do good.
Character.org: 11 Principles of Effective Character Education.
Award-winning psychologist and educator Thomas Lickona offers more than one hundred practical strategies that parents and schools have used to help kids build strong personal character as the foundation for a purposeful, productive, and fulfilling life.
Succeeding in life takes character, and Lickona shows how irresponsible and destructive behavior can invariably be traced to the absence of good character and its ten essential qualities: wisdom, justice, fortitude, self-control, love, a positive attitude, hard work, integrity, gratitude, and humility.

Character is who you are when no one is looking and who you are when everyone is looking. In today’s world, which is overly preoccupied with image, it is easy to worry too much about our reputation and too little about our character.
Building a reputation is largely a popularity venture, but building character requires you to focus on your values, actions and commitments. Noble talk and good intentions are not enough to build true character.

Mr. [Joe] Ricketts has become an increasingly active player in Republican politics through several political action committees, including Ending Spending. ……. The 54-page proposal was professionally bound and illustrated with color photographs, indicating that it is far beyond a mere discussion. The strategists have already contacted Larry Elder, a black conservative radio host in Los Angeles, about serving as a spokesman, and the plan calls for a group of black business leaders to endorse the effort. The strategists have also registered a domain name, Character Matters.

Andy Donner talks about White character
– North West Front: Radio Free Northwest – Sept 12 2013.
“I have called this phenomenon the marketing character because it is based on experiencing oneself as a commodity, and one’s value not as ‘use value’ but as ‘exchange value’. The living being becomes a commodity on the ‘personality market’. … Success depends largely on how well persons sell themselves on the market, how well they get their personalities across, how nice a ‘package’ they are; whether they are ‘cheerful’, ‘sound’, ‘aggressive’, ‘reliable’, ‘ambitious’; furthermore, what their family backgrounds are, what clubs they belong to, and whether they kinow the ‘right’ people….. must fulfil one conditions: to be in demand. .. The aim of the marketing character is to be desirable under all conditions of the personality market…. The puzzling question why contemporary human beings love to buy and to consume, and yet are so little attached to what they buy, finds its most significant answer in the marketing character phenomenon. The marketing character’s lack of attachment also makes them indifferent to things. What matters is perhaps the prestige or the comfort that things give, but things per se have no substance. They are utterly expendable, along with friends or lovers, who are expendable too, since no deeper tie exists to any of them.” — Erich Fromm; To Have or to Be.
