Nelson Grima et al:

EoP Re: Scientists urge UN to add Environmental destruction to Geneva War Crimes.

“Despite calls for a fifth convention two decades ago, military conflict continues to destroy megafauna, push species to extinction, and poison water resources.” In a letter to the editor published Tuesday by the journal Nature, two dozen scientists from around the world urged the United Nations’ International Law Commission to adopt a Fifth Geneva Convention that creates protections for the environment in armed conflicts. – Nature: Stop military conflicts from trashing environment; via Common Dreams.

The Military Industrial Complex Is A Major Contributor To Climate Change — This Calls For A Merger Of Anti-War, Climate And Refugee Solidarity Movements. It is not enough to academically trace a red thread between issues. Recognizing the connections that tie climate chaos to war to imperialism to the growing refugee crisis demand solutions founded on that real-world intersectionality. We need an active solidarity that erases the demarcations of single-issue movements and builds a power that reflects the reality of our place and time. Likewise, we must be wary of soft reforms, greenwashing and capitalism’s unending affinity for shaming people. – Popular Resistance: There is No Such Thing as a Green War.

The advent of peace in four countries with long experiences of deadly armed conflict hasn’t been kind to the environment, with a new study showing greater rates of deforestation during peacetime than during the years of war. The paper, published in the journal Land Use Policy, shows how Sri Lanka, Nepal, Peru and Ivory Coast experienced “alarming forest loss” in the years immediately after the end of their respective civil conflicts, based on analysis of forest-cover data gathered through remote-sensing methods. “Rates of deforestation in war zones show a dramatic increase once peace is declared, and except for Nepal, it is significantly high for the other three countries we studied,” Nelson Grima, a co-author of the paper and postdoctoral associate at the University of Vermont’s Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, told Mongabay. What the four countries do share, however, is a dire loss of forest cover. The average rate of deforestation in the five years after the end of the respective conflicts was 68 percent higher than in the last five years of the conflicts, according to the study. The data, based on analysis of Landsat satellite imagery, gave the global average rate of increase in deforestation as 7.2 percent. …….. In 2016, after more than half a century of civil war that left some 220,000 dead and more than 7 million displaced, a peace agreement was reached between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Colombian state. The end of what was once the Western Hemisphere’s longest-running armed conflict is assumed to be an outcome broadly beneficial to society, but for the environment it has proven to be a double-edged sword. For decades, the Colombian Amazon — a region that makes up nearly half of the country’s territory — was virtually blocked off to human encroachment and development by the presence of the leftist guerrillas of the FARC, who long depended on the shelter provided by the region’s thick, largely uninhabited forests. Although the FARC contributed to significant environmental damages over the years by blowing up oil and gas pipelines and supporting the widespread cultivation of illicit crops, in many cases they were the only mechanism in place for regulating land use in the far-flung regions under their control. In the year following the implementation of the 2016 peace accords, the rate of deforestation in Colombia rose by 44 percent — a dramatic increase attributed to the FARC’s disarmament and withdrawal from isolated areas of the country which, even today, have yet to be consolidated by the Colombian state. The power vacuum opened in the FARC’s absence has led to widespread degradation in some of the country’s most ecologically important — and in many cases, still unexplored — areas. –  Mongabay: Casualty of peace? Study shows rise in deforestation after conflicts; PRI: In the Colombian Amazon, Peace has environmental consequences; Pacific Standard: How the End of Civil Convlicts can lead to increased deforestation.

Your Common Defense to End America’s Forever Wars Pledge – if you want it to be effective – needs to (a) abolish the root cause of global perpetual war economy: i.e. the Babylon WiP clauses of international law enabling procreation and consumption above ecological carrying capacity limits; and (b) provide legislation enabling the people who are currently employed in the perpetual war slavery freedumb economy; to transition to a militia responsible freedom peace economy. EoP recommended Truth and Reconciliation to End Abel and Kane Cold War [eoptrc-akcoldwar.tygae.org.za] to implement Ecology of Peace Scientific and Cultural law [eop-scicultlaw.tygae.org.za] as international law, does both.

Alpert: Why Babylon WiP Fake Peaceniks have no plan for Peace:
In Peace seekers have no plan for enduring peace, Dr. Jack Alpert argues that Peaceniks failure to move society from conflict to peace, their establishment of never ending or honoured “peace accords, moral codes, acts of economic justice, and environmental laws, are like traffic signals” which “cause people to relinquish freedoms” but, “do not stop (change) the behaviors that increase scarcity, conflict, and environmental destruction”: “result from a faulty perception of what increases or decreases conflict. Where, peace seekers have acted as if conflict is caused by bad leadership maybe they should have acted as if trends in conflict are driven by trends in scarcity. Maybe they would have been more successful if they acted as if trends in scarcity are driven by the collective behaviors of 6 billion people. That while each individual acts benignly to achieve personal objectives the unintentional result is an increase in scarcity and conflict.”

Another reason for ignoring the above view of human conflict – according to Dr. Alpert — is that peace seekers, even when successful at restraining the police, military or mediating hostilities, do not change our course toward conflict. They only delay it. In the process, peace seekers consume the very energy required to change the things that would make societies head toward peace.

In Human Predicament: Better Common Sense Required: The Future of Social Conflict, Jack Alpert challenges us to answer two questions Corporate Oligarchs who profit from Unsustainable procreation (demand for more consumers), production and consumption, including its scarcity-conflict resource war consequences; do not want citizens, politicians, police, judges, prosecutors and those tasked with national security to ask themselves.

Let’s consider that Peace and conflict are defined not as descriptions of behaviour between nations, but as trends describing social conditions. Put differently: Conflict is not defined as the violence between neighbours and nations, but as the unwanted intrusion of one person’s existence and consumption behaviour upon another person.

There are two kinds of conflict:

* Direct: he took my car, he enslaved me, he beat me, he raped me, he killed me; and Indirect. Indirect intrusions are the by-product of other people’s behaviour.

* Indirect: ‘All the trees on our island were consumed by our grandparents,’ is an indirect intrusion of a past generation on a present one. ‘The rich people raised the price of gasoline and we can’t afford it,’ and ‘The government is offering people welfare to breed more children’ are current economic and demographic intrusions by one present group on another present group. Free Trade enabling overexploitation, overproduction and overconsumption of a nation natural capital resources is an economic intrusion by one set of oligarchs upon another set of citizens whose lives depend on such natural capital.

System conflict is the sum of intrusions experienced by each constituent, summed over all the constituents. A measure of the existing global conflict is the sum of six billion sets of direct and indirect intrusions. A measure of the UK’s conflict is the sum of 62 million sets of direct and indirect intrusions.

Using this definition of conflict, any citizen, politician, policeman, judge or legislator sincerely concerned about finding out whether and how the United Kingdom’s socio-economic and political system is moving towards peace or towards conflict; can do so, by determining the answers to the following questions:

Procreation Footprint: How many children per family leads to peace; or conversely how many children per family, contributes to greater resource scarcity, and exponential increase in conflict, i.e. an individuals’ ‘breeding war combatant’ status? [According to the research of Dr. Jack Alpert, the global answer – currently based on current population numbers — is one child per family leads to peace; two or more children leads to conflict]

Production/Consumption Carbon Footprint: How much exploitation and production of non-renewable and renewable natural resources relative to the nation’s Natural Capital carrying capacity footprint leads to peace; or conversely how much of a nation’s non-renewable and renewable natural resources can or should a corporation exploit into production of consumer goods, before such exploitation and production contributes to greater resource scarcity and exponential increase in conflict; i.e. a corporations ‘production combatant’ status? [All utilization of non-renewable natural resources—fossil fuels, metals, and minerals—at any level, contributes to scarcity-conflict. Peaceful utilization of Aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric natural habitats requires that they be degraded only at levels less than or equal to the levels at which they are regenerated by Nature. Exploiting renewable resources above their capacity to regenerate is not sustainable and does not contribute to peaceful resource relations; i.e. contribute to scarcity-conflict.]

In the absence of the worlds political, economic and corporate leaders confronting and acknowledging the difference between sustainable peaceful consumption and procreation and unsustainable scarcity-conflict aggravating consumption and procreation; and implementing legislation and Jurisprudence in accordance thereto; Dr. Alpert provides proof how the global AnthroCorpocentric Jurisprudence Suicide Freight Train has as much chance of muddling through the coming ‘Falling Man Syndrome’ Crisis of Conflict, as an individual sitting in an unbelted car crash. (Non-Linearity and Social ConflictRapid Population Decline or Bust)

Alpert compares humanity’s belief that “in 200 years, our Right to Breed and consume has resulted in the exponential consumption of over half of the Earth’s resources, and nothing bad has happened yet”; to a man who has fallen out of a 150 story building, passing the window of the 60th story, calling out to a friend “‘I’ve fallen 90 stories in the past 5 seconds and nothing bad has happened yet”.
