14 Aug: Billionaires Bernie Marcus & John Catsimidis complain about taxes.
Billionaires Bernie Marcus and John Catsimatidis this week took to the pages of the Wall Street Journal to complain about having to pay taxes on the grounds that they know how to spend their money far better than the government does, and should thus be left alone so they can create wealth. – Raw Story: Billionaires whine about paying taxes in reality-challenged Wall Street Journal op-ed.

09 Aug 2019: R300 million robbery at billionaire Johann Rupert warehouse.
Johann Rupert: Even when you’re the second-richest person in the country, life can still pose its extreme challenges. Johann Rupert has learned that the hard way this week, after a warehouse belonging to his Richemont Luxury Goods company was the target of a daring jewellery raid. As reported by the Sunday Times, a case of business robbery was under investigation at the Rivonia-based facility. It’s understood that multiple robbers turned up to the property on Friday night, which is responsible for the global distribution of luxury Richemont jewellery: Rupert has made his name as a luxury watch manufacturer, too. Conspiracy theories mulled over Richemont robbery. Guards were overpowered, staff were tied up and security doors were completely destroyed in the robbery. And, you might as well queue up the conspiracy theories now, because the CCTV on the premises was apparently “not working at the time of the incident”. – South African: Johann Rupert ‘targeted’ in R300 million jewellery heist; News 24: Richemont warehouse robbed of R300m in jewellery – report.

BLF Party happy wealth was repossessed from Rupert warehouse robbery.
In a mocking and sarcastic statement on Sunday, deregistered political party Black First, Land First (BLF) took a pot shot at billionaire Johann Rupert, one of their greatest longtime political targets. The BLF’s deputy president Zanele Lwana said their “revolutionary movement” considered the crime a “brave act of repossession” that “must be applauded”. “We hope that those who repossessed the jewellery are black people. Only black people have a legitimate right to take back that which belongs to them. All the mineral wealth in South Africa was stolen from black people. “BLF will ask both the SA Revenue Service (Sars) and the National Prosecuting Authority to investigate Johann Rupert for possible tax evasion, money laundering and possession of illicit goods. Why would a warehouse keep jewelry to the value of up to R300 million? “As long as the historical mass robbery of black people of their land and wealth is not corrected, such acts of repossession, if conducted by blacks, are infinitely revolutionary.” – Citizen: Delisted BLF party happy wealth was ‘repossessed’ from Johann Rupert in warehouse robbery.

73/74: Johann Rupert & Steve Biko discuss ‘when & how, not if’ of land reform
Rupert, however, ended up meeting Biko, who he claimed to have had endless discussions with on the issue of land. Rupert said Afrikaners at the time of Biko felt “oppressed” and “endangered” [like rhino] and so “we” ended up talking about it with Biko. After several hours of discussions, Rupert said he and Biko “came to a conclusion that we’ll never have peace in this country if Afrikaner nationalism and black nationalism cannot come to a compromise. It was in ’73 or ’74, we’re sitting in 2018, we better find that compromise.” The multibillionaire said that although he was not opposed to expropriation of land without compensation, he would rather “move it” to property because the issue of land was “very emotional” for both black and white people. “It’s not a question of doing it, but it’s done. It’s how it’s done because the last 10 years have not been good with state interference. We’ll never have peace unless we have proper redress. – The Citizen: Johann Rupert talks about his conversation with Steve Biko on land.

19 Jul 17: Andile: Biko Black Conciousness Africans prefer responsible landreform.
“The point is this we can’t have a land reform process based on charity, goodwill, few farmers, when they want, when they feel like they will be good to their people. No it cannot be based on this. It is a national responsibility to do it, not to punish anyone. … We can’t have a reform process based on charity. This is an insult to our people, because this is our land. Our government, unfortunately this government will not do it. And so people like Mark, of course its a good thing to hear, here and there, you know we are doing good, we are taking care of our children and our workers, and so on, but this is not real dignity for a people. We want to feel as citizens here, not dependent on the goodwill of these guys. – Andile Mngxitama: Land Policy Expert – SABC: The Big Debate (ep. 1, Feb 17): Does Land Reform Threaten Our Future?.

11 Oct 2018: Giving Pledge Tanzanian Billionaire Mohammed Dewji Abducted from Colosseum Hotel and Fitness Club in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam, allegedly by white South Africans; released after a few days unharmed:
Mohammed “Mo” Gulamabbas Dewji (born 8 May 1975) is the owner of MeTL Group, a Tanzanian conglomerate founded by his father in the 1970s. In 2001, Dewji married Saira, his high school sweetheart with whom he has three children. Dewji is a Shia Muslim from the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamat as known as the ‘Twelvers’ sect. Dewji is one of the three Giving Pledge billionaires, the others being Zimbabwean Strive Masiyiwa and South African Patrice Motsepe. In the early hours of October the 11th 2018 at around 5am, Dewji was kidnapped and abducted by armed gunmen outside the Colloseum Gym in Dar Es Salaam. Dar es Salaam Special Zone police commander Lazaro Mambosasa said armed kidnappers whom he described as “white men,” suggesting they were foreigners, grabbed Mr Dewji. By midday Friday, 30 people were reported to have been held by the police for questioning in connection with the crime. Mr Mambosasa said the number was likely to rise as investigations continued. He did not name those in police custody, but on Thursday he had indicated that the initial arrests involved security staff of the Colosseum Hotel: five guards from G1 Security and the security manager. The police also visited the Yacht Club on the shores of the Indian Ocean, where Mr Dewji is believed to be a member, to study CCTV footage. The management, however, said he did not go there on the day he disappeared. He served as a Member of Parliament for Singida Urban constituency between 2005 and 2015. He is popular for providing clean water across the constituency and constructing Chama cha Mapinduzi offices across Singida Region. Mr Dewji also runs the Mo Dewji Foundation, which provides scholarships to outstanding high school graduates seeking further education. The family of Tanzania’s only billionaire Mohammed Dewji, who was kidnapped last week in Dar es Salaam, on Monday announced a reward of nearly half a million dollars for information on his whereabouts. Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji, who was kidnapped by armed gunmen and held for ransom over a week ago, was released on Saturday morning, according to reports. Dewji did not know who his abductors were but believes they were from South Africa, his office told Forbes Africa. Said a source who works closely with Dewji to FORBES AFRICA: “He was released in the middle of Dar es Salaam around 3AM today, unharmed, after which he ran to the nearest security guards who dropped him off home. He does not know who his abductors were. He was only taken about 20 minutes away from the city center, so he has been in Dar es Salaam since the abduction. He has no visible bodily harm with the exception of marks from the handcuffs.” She also revealed that the abductors wanted ransom but let him go on account of the media hype around the kidnapping. – Wikipedia: Mohammed Dewji; Zero Hedge: Africa’s Youngest Billionaire Abducted in Brazen Early Morning Hotel Raid; The East African: Who would want to kidnap Mohammed Dewji?; Daily Nation: 30 arrested as Tanzania police search for Mohammed Dewji; Sunday Times: Family of kidnapped Tanzanian billionaire offers reward; IOL: Tanzanian billionaire found unharmed, says kidnappers were South African; Forbes Africa: Abducted Tanzanian Billionaire Mo Dewji Returns Home; The Giving Pledge: Mohammed Dewji.

EoP – Truth and Reconciliation to End Abel and Kane Cold War – UN Resolution:

When two people believe opposing things, chances are that one of them is wrong. It pays to find out if that someone is you. …. holding wrong opinions in one’s head and making bad decisions based on them instead of having thoughtful disagreements is one of the greatest tragedies of mankind. ….. That quote is from Ray Dalio, the founder and Grand Poobah at Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund in the world and a successful billionaire entrepreneur. Dalio likes to develop the idea of thoughtful disagreement, in which the goal is not to convince the opposite party that you are right, but simply to find out which view is true and then what to do about it.  Both parties must be motivated by a genuine fear of missing important perspectives. In such a situation it is about exploring the truth and not simply arguing. Or “winning” the argument. In reality, the winners of an argument, if there is such a thing, are those who leave the discussion having learned something. Whereas the losers are those who stubbornly cling to their thoughts, beliefs and reasoning without having given any consideration to the others’ point of view. – The Startup: How to have better discussions — the art of thoughtful disagreement.
