EoP Re Survival 101: How and Why Climate Victory Gardens Fail.
‘Dig for victory’ was a slogan from the Second World War, calling people to plant vegetable gardens in support of the war effort. The idea has been turned over by Green America, who have been encouraging people to plant Climate Victory Gardens. The project has been running for a couple of years now, and it connects climate change and gardening in a useful way, empowering people to do something local in their own areas. It also shows the difference between sustainability and regenerative practice in very down to earth terms, encouraging people to garden in a way that locks up carbon in the soil. Small gardens are not going to make a huge difference to emissions on their own, but they raise awareness of approaches that, when scaled up to commercial farms, will make a very large difference. And the project invites people to log their garden on a map of Climate Victory Gardens, showing the cumulative effect that lots of individual projects add up to. – Earthbound Report: Green America’s Climate Victory Gardens.
Cunningham Township is working with the library, parks, schools, community gardens and community partners to launch Solidarity Gardens CU. By providing seeds, tools, knowledge, and redistribution, we wish to address current and worsening food insecurity by amplifying the initiatives local residents to grow food for themselves as well as our neighbors in need. Individuals and organizations are encouraged and empowered to plant gardens throughout the Champaign-Urbana area and donate land, garden supplies, and expertise. With help from the broader community, Solidarity Gardens CU will be offering free seeds, seedlings, tools, soil, containers, miscellaneous supplies, gardening expertise, and educational resources to any interested party in the Champaign-Urbana area. Produce grown in gardens may be used by the owner for their own food needs and/or distributed to community members who are facing economic and food access challenges through a Solidarity Gardens CU distribution network. Participants will receive a Solidarity Garden yard sign, donated by Cunningham Township, to acknowledge their effort. Volunteers are also needed to plant seeds and take care of plots. Request your plot now: * Have space for a garden? * Want to help someone else with raising food? * Have extra produce to donate? * Volunteer Now. – Solidarity Gardens; SQ-PR: Solidarity Gardens Launched to Address Food Disruprion and Insecurity.
Urban Farming Guys: The Lykins neighbourhood is a place to grow wings and take flight, or come and stay and buy a house for $1. SAfrica: Why Urban Gardens Fail: No Family Planning Poverty Fiat Currency Addictions:
In his response to a question from a journalist from the Ivory Coast, Macron described the problems Africa faces as “civilizational” and seeming to imply that African women with “seven to eight children” were a significant obstacle to progress. “The challenge of Africa is completely different, it is much deeper,” he reportedly said, and added, “it is civilizational today.” In his three and a half minute answer, transcribed on Media Guinee, Macron also added that when “countries still have seven to eight children per woman, you can decide to spend billions of euros, you will not stabilize anything.” …………. Getting city dwellers to grow their own food is part of the solution to the hunger crisis. Urban food growing is also critical because it shortens the food value chain, which not only shrinks the carbon footprint of food, but also decreases the level of waste because reducing the number of times that fresh produce is handled decreases the likelihood of it being damaged and spoiled. However, food gardening is only part of the solution; it is not the final answer. There are plenty of reasons why urban food gardens fail in southern African cities: a lack of skills and money to buy seedlings, fertilisers and equipment; vandalism or theft; poor soils; cultural attitudes towards growing food (many poorer communities would rather be seen buying food in a supermarket than growing it themselves, as this is perceived to be what modern, wealthy city dwellers do). While food garden initiatives are often well meaning, there are very real reasons why they fail. We must bear this in mind when we craft policies and development projects that are geared towards addressing food and hunger issues in the urban context. We must also guard against getting locked into urban gardens as the only solution. It’s useful to understand why some food gardens succeed, and why others fail, because it means we can be more intelligent about planning and rolling out other similar projects in future. Urban food gardens in poorer communities often fail, not due to a lack of interest, but because the investment is too high. One lady, explaining to University of Cape Town researchers about the communities she works with in Philippi on the Cape Flats, pointed out that the people she trained in food growing were often so poor that they had to be very strategic about how they used their time and labour. For many, they needed to trade their labour for work that paid in cash this week so they could buy food immediately, rather than invest in the promise of fresh vegetables in a month’s time. This is particularly true when considering that one bad heat wave or pest outbreak could destroy such a large time and resource investment. Researchers looking at success rates of some food gardening initiatives in poorer communities found that the ones that worked were often those that employed people from a community to work in the gardens for a wage. Gardens that provide jobs first, before food, often succeed. People choose to buy certain foods over others, or to invest in growing their own food, for rational financial and practical reasons. It’s important for city planners and civil society organisations to remember this, particularly when thinking of starting up food gardening initiatives in poor communities. The best intentions to support struggling families might fail because of the tough financial realities they face. – Politico: Angry reaction to Emmanuel Macron’s remark that Africa has a ‘civilizational’ problem; ATTN: Here’s Why People Are Furious About the French President’s Comments About African Women; South Africa: Why Urban Food Gardening is Not the Answer; Only Part of the Solution; South Africa: Why Urban Food Gardens Sometimes Fail; Smart Cities: The Secrets of Success for Urban Food Gardens.

How Castro safely Sully crash landed Cuba’s industrial agriculture economic collapse plane.
Captain Sully: Nobody warned us. Nobody told us we would lose both engines at a lower altitude than any jet in history. This was dual engine loss at 2800 feet followed by an immediate water landing. Nobody has ever trained for an incident like that: This is the Captain: Brace for Impact …..….When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990s, the country faced an immediate crisis – feeding the population – and an ongoing challenge: how to create a new low-energy society. The breakup of the Soviet Union in the 1990’s created a major economic crisis in Cuba known as the special period. So we have from 1982 to 1983 a freefall of the economy of 34% of GDP, gross domestic product. When I tell you freefall of the economy, try to imagine an aeroplane suddenly lose their engines. It was really a crash. Cuba lost 80% of its export and import markets. Oil imports dropped by more than half, buses stopped running, factories closed, electricity blackouts were common and food was scarce. People almost starved. Over the next decade Cuba took drastic legal social, cultural and agricultural landreform steps to find solutions. It is the first country to face the crisis that we will all face, the peak oil [economic collapse] crisis. – Sully Trailer: Plane hits birds: Landing on the Hudson River; SQ-CS: The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil.

While many in the world are completely dependent on large scale agriculture, the Russian people feed themselves. Their agricultural economy is small scale, predominantly organic and in the capable hands of the nation’s people. Russians have something built into their DNA that creates the desire to grow their own food. It’s a habit that has fed the Russian nation for centuries. It’s not just a hobby but a massive contribution to Russia’s agriculture. In 2011, 51% of Russia’s food was grown either by dacha communities (40%), or peasant farmers (11%) leaving the rest (49%) of production to the large agricultural enterprises. But when you dig down into the earthy data from the Russian Statistics Service you discover some impressive details. Again in 2011, dacha gardens produced over 80% of the countries fruit and berries, over 66% of the vegetables, almost 80% of the potatoes and nearly 50% of the nations milk, much of it consumed raw. In a myriad of villages like Voskresenskoye, nestled deep in the Russian countryside, the monetary turmoil roiling the nation’s large cities still seems a largely distant threat. “This crisis is for the rich, for people who have dollars. We never had money here,” said Tamara Boychenko, a 68-year-old retired resident of the village located in northwest Russia about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from Saint Petersburg. Food sovereignty puts the people who produce, distribute and eat food at the centre of decisions about food production and policy rather than corporations and market institutions that have come to dominate the global food system. In Havana, Cuba 90% of the city’s fresh produce comes from local urban farms and gardens. In 2003, the Russian government signed the Private Garden Plot Act into law, entitling citizens to private plots of land for free. These plots range from 0.89 hectares to 2.75 hectares. … In 2003 the Russian President signed into law a further “Private Garden Plot Act” enabling Russian citizens to receive free of charge from the state, plots of land in private inheritable ownership. Sizes of the plots differ by region but are between one and three hectares each [1 hectare = 2.2 acres]. Produce grown on these plots is not subject to taxation. A further subsequent law to facilitate the acquisition of land for gardening was passed in June 2006. “Essentially, what Russian gardeners do,” he concludes, “is demonstrate that gardeners can feed the world – and you do not need any GMOs, industrial farms, or any other technological gimmicks to guarantee everybody’s got enough food to eat. Bear in mind that Russia only has 110 days of growing season per year – so in the US, for example, gardeners’ output could be substantially greater. Today, however, the area taken up by lawns in the US is two times greater than that of Russia’s gardens – and it produces nothing but a multi-billion-dollar lawn care industry.” – SQ-RN: Russia’s Rural Villagers are Unphased by Economic Collapse; SQ-NH: Russian Family Gardens Produce 40% of Russian Food; SQ-TB: In 1999, 35 million small family plots produced 90% of Russia’s potatoes, 77% of vegetables, 87% of fruits, 59% of meat, 49% of milk.

Russian Barter Relationships Economic Collapse Lessons for those Addicted to Fiat Currency:
There are places in Russia between 1995 and 2005 where we saw as high as 65% [starvation dieoff] decline in population [due to Soviet Union economic collapse] …… Reciprocity – aka barter exchange – as a form of social-currency; particularly where other forms of currency have collapsed due to economic collapse. Reciprocity builds stronger relationships; even some animals practice reciprocity such as when a cat that is taken care of by its owner, it will bring it a dead mouse to say thank you. ………. Where there is no reason to expect the economy to ever come back, one must learn how to make strange new friends, and keep them, for life. … Another element that was helpful to Russians was a particular feature of Russian culture: since money was not particularly useful in the Soviet era economy, and did not convey status or success, it was not particularly prized either, and shared rather freely. Friends thought nothing of helping each other out in times of need. It was important that everyone had some, not that one had more than the others. With the arrival of market economics, this cultural trait disappeared, but it persisted long enough to help people to survive the transition. ….. Luckily, there was a limited supply of another sort of currency available to us. It was close to the end of Gorbachev’s ill-fated anti-alcoholism campaign, during which vodka was rationed. There was a death in my family, for which we received a funeral’s worth of vodka coupons, which we of course redeemed right away. What was left of the vodka was placed in the trunk of the trusty old Lada, and off we went. Each half-liter bottle of vodka was exchanged for ten liters of gasoline, giving vodka far greater effective energy density than rocket fuel. There is a lesson here: when faced with a collapsing economy, one should stop thinking of wealth in terms of money. Access to actual physical resources and assets, as well as intangibles such as connections and relationships, quickly becomes much more valuable than mere cash. … You will need neighbors to barter with, to help you, and to keep you company. Even a small farm is probably overkill in terms of the amount of farmland available, because without the ability to get crops to market, or a functioning cash economy to sell them in, there is no reason to grow a large surplus of food. Tens of acres are a waste when all you need is a few thousand square feet. Many Russian families managed to survive with the help of a standard garden plot of one sotka, which is 100 square meters, or, if you prefer, 0.024710538 acres, or 1076.391 square feet. What is needed, of course, is a small town or a village: a relatively small, relatively dense settlement, with about an acre of farmland for every 30 or so people, and with zoning regulations designed for fair use and sustainability, not opportunities for capital investment, growth, property values, or other sorts of “development”. Further, it would have to be a place where people know each other and are willing to help each other – a real community. – [EoP Amended] Gen James Cartwright, Leaders & Legends; 16 October 2008 – JHU Carey Business; Dmitry Orlov Twilight of the Antipodes; SQ-FTW: Dmitry Orlov: Post-Soviet Lessons for a Post-American Century;
South Africa Urban Community Gardens
Around the world, food gardens are springing up on suburban sidewalks, waste spaces and inner-city rooftops, their farmers motivated by everything from basic food security and employment creation to more bourgeois concerns such as slow food, prime freshness and the drive to “eat local”. Joburg is no exception: it is home to several long-running food gardening initiatives, with many more in the pipeline. Joubert Park’s GreenHouse Project [ghouse.org.za], for example, has been going since 2001. It’s an unexpected oasis in the midst of Hillbrow’s raucous, decaying sprawl that serves primarily as a walk-in demo centre, according to one of the project’s “champions”, Itumeleng Pooe. A few kilometres away, in Bertrams, the Bambanani Food & Herb Co-operative [FB: BertramsInnerCityFarm] is an award-winning organic farm that was established in 2006 on an abandoned bowling green. Devised to improve the community’s access to more nutritious food, it sells its fare to local supermarkets, restaurants and hip inner-city markets. It has also played a significant role in educating people about organic farming techniques. Duduzile Duru is head gardener at Victoria Yards in Lorentzville. This is one of the latest additions to Joburg’s urban farming scene, a place where the public will soon be able to buy locally grown fruit and veg sourced from across the city. – STimes: Gardens in the sky change Jozi CBD from concrete jungle to urban farm; CSMonitor: An urban gardening project greens Johannesburg rooftops.
Two communal vegetable gardens have made a big difference to life in Khenana informal settlement in Durban, where residents have used the money from sales of spinach and cabbage to buy masks, gloves and sanitisers for everyone during the Covid-19 pandemic. With help from Abahlali baseMjondolo, Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra in Brazil and Potere al Popolo in Italy, they started with one garden and now they have two. The two gardens are close together and are not fenced. The land belongs to the municipality. Mnguni says it was hard at first as they struggled to find seeds and didn’t know how to go about planting. “We put our heads together and came up with an idea that worked. We planted spinach and after some time we harvested it and started selling it. People would come to the garden to purchase our produce,” Mnguni says. He says the project has inspired many other informal settlements to start their own food gardens. Residents rotate the work in the garden, with those who have jobs working in the garden during weekends. They also rotate the sales. “There are challenges,” Mnguni says. “We lack information and training, if we could have basic training in farming we could go far.” – Groundup: Shack dwellers’ vegetable co-operative funds new toilets, masks and sanitizers.
The relatively new movement of urban farming has, at its core, the growing of food in the city or on its periphery, on a relatively small scale; and sometimes extends to rearing goats, rabbits, chickens and ducks, and keeping bees. Urban farming is distinguished from what went before by its motive: a distinction that is often evident in the resulting garden typologies, which intentionally target people’s preconceived ideas about growing food in the city by planting on sidewalks, roof tops, old sports fields, alleyways or in other underutilised spaces. Recent projects experiment with growing vertically, with hydroponics, in repurposed containers, in internal warehouse spaces or in shipping containers – urging a new perspective on the productive use of various spaces. In addition, assumptions of food economy are challenged through models that encourage: selling through box schemes; making food available for free; and trading produce, seeds or seedlings. Often urban farming initiatives rely on volunteers who are keen to get their hands dirty, and who then go home with a wealth of knowledge and confidence to apply in their own gardens. Importantly, these projects often have a community focus – while they might depend on community patronage and support, they also provide a valuable platform for community engagement. – Solid Green: Urban Farms.
The Wits Siyakhana Initiative (WSI) has been running for over 10 years, and functions as a change agent to engage individuals and organisations in Johannesburg, Gauteng and across the entire spectrum of the South and Southern African society to improve food security, as well as to promote healthy and resilient communities and environments. Siyakhana has experimented with what to plant, how to plant, how to manage water, and with the infrastructure on their site – from composting toilets to rainwater-storage ponds and a mushroom-growing facility. Experimentation has given them a wealth of knowledge and Siyakhana is now well positioned to train new garden managers and support other gardens with their knowledge.
Bertrams Inner City Farm – a Bambanani Food and Herb Cooperative Project – is a real inner-city garden that truly understands its responsibility towards its resident community. It was started on an old bowling green next to Ellis Park, and has become established in the community with regular customers – shops, small businesses and the public – to whom it supplies basic staples like kale, spinach and tomatoes. The managers of the Bertrams garden were trained by Siyakhana and are themselves very knowledgeable and competent gardeners.
On a piece of disused land at the Pirates Sports Club in Greenside, Netanya Naude runs a small scale urban farm project called Art of Craft that includes a food garden, herbs and plants with medicinal value, from which she makes tisanes that, together with vegetable crops are sold at the Pirates Saturday Market. This initiative offers workshops and interactive gardening sessions, and is a showcase for companion planting and 100% organically grown produce.
Naude has also helped Little Green Men to start the first Little Green Garden next to the Westbury Youth Centre – an initiative which aims to empower a network of environmentally and socially conscious entrepreneurs as well as disadvantaged youth from the community by offering realistic and productive income-generating opportunities.
Oranjezicht City Farm in Cape Town is a real showcase project that was started on an abandoned bowling green that had been accumulating rubbish and detracting from the quality of life for the surrounding community. In late 2012 and early 2013, the bowling green was converted into the Oranjezicht City Farm, a non-profit project that has secured the site in a positive way by celebrating local food, culture and community through education, networking, trade and enjoyment around urban farming.
Abalimi Bezekhaya (meaning farmers of the home in isiXhosa), established 1982, is a non-profit micro-farming organisation that aims to provide basic human necessities for indigent persons, by assisting impoverished groups and communities within the area of Greater Cape Town known as the Cape Flats to establish and maintain their own vegetable gardens, so as to enable those groups and communities to supplement their existing, inadequate supply of food and create livelihoods. Harvest of Hope was set up as a social business that connects the producer and consumers within the food system more closely. It allows the consumer to subscribe to the harvest of the Abalimi farmers and thus share the risks of farming through the purchase of fresh organic vegetable boxes. Abalimi Bezekhaya promotes small scale urban farming. We are a development organization rather than charity, because we partner with active members of the community to aid their efforts in greening, growing and bettering their communities. We provide training, supplies and support to enable the urban poor to obtain employment or become self-employed as gardeners, gardening assistants and urban micro-farmers. We furthermore engage in the conservation, rehabilitation and protection of the natural environment within the Cape Flats. Our garden centers are based in local communities and our Harvest of Hope program helps maintain stable income security for these urban farmers.
The community garden Moya We Khaya (The Spirit of Home) currently has eleven members, of which ten are part of the founding group. The garden was formed in February of 2014, when 12 gardeners started growing vegetables in the very poor soil. A lot of compost, manure, and hard work was needed. Back then, all 12 members were working together as a big group, but they soon decided to divide the space so everybody could have their own set of plots. With this change in structure, their harvest improved immensely as everybody could now work at their own pace. To extend their knowledge, the community took part in training courses through Abalimi and the Department of Agriculture. Although the garden is divided into individual sections and plots, the group still works as a team. When one member is facing challenges, everybody steps up to help. Only two of the members have vehicles, so they will help the other members to collect needed materials and seeds. There is a real family feel at Moya We Khaya. The poor soil was not the only challenge the group had to face. Christina Kaba had been trying to get permission for the land since 1995 when the neighbouring Manyanani Peace Park was built. When she was denied the land, Christina didn’t surrender, she kept fighting for her vision of a community garden. Eventually she contacted Rob Small for help. Finally, in 2014, her vision came to life and Moya We Khaya was formed. The group of passionate and hard-working gardeners have been there every day since. “It doesn’t matter if it’s raining or if it’s winter, you’ll find us here, we are fighters!” says Christina. “People have hands, they have energy, but they don’t have land”, Christina says and explains that one of the biggest issues that individuals face in the townships is not having enough space to grow vegetables.

Lawrence Wilkerson: We need some sort of relationship like that between Washington and Beijing today, I think. And I do not mean in any way that we should rule the world together. What I mean is the [ecological & economic collapse consequences of WiP ‘right to breed/consume above ecological carrying capacity limits’ intnl law] challenges like we’re going to confront in the 21st century, challenges that could be [species ending] existential, challenges like climate change, challenges like enough water to drink, enough food to eat, and so forth — I’ve seen some projections that say — by climatologists whose views I respect, that say we could have only arable land and water enough for some half-billion people. What do we do with the other 9 billion? Where do we bury them? How do we deal with that kind of massive change in human relationships with this planet? So these are huge challenges. So what I’m saying is you need this kind of great-power relationship, this great-state relationship to begin to lead the [EoP truth and reconciliation responsible freedom] way for others to follow. – [EoP Amended] The Real News: Reality Asserts Itself with Paul Jay: Lawrence Wilkerson: Who Makes Foreign Policy: If We Remain Predators; the Planet Will Cast us off [SQ Copy].

Grab an Able Reason Ego Ready Room Death Panel Rock: Draw a Sincere Peacenik / Honourable Warrior Ecocide Footprint Line
Marcus Luttrell: I was in bad shape, I was dying and I didn’t know what to do. I was lying against this tree and looking at the moon and feeling sorry for myself. I lay there and said you are being a bitch, get up, lets go. What was I going to do, lay down there and die? I was thinking I am still alive, so the mission is still on, lets go. So I reached out and I grabbed a rock, and I reached out as far as I could and I drew a line with it in infront of me. I said I am going to crawl to that line, if my feet hit it, and I am still alive, I am going to do it again. I did that for seven miles. ………. Gen James Cartwright: The speed of informing someone, of bringing key relevant information was so much quicker in a brutal no rank ready room, the downside that we have found is extremely small, the upsides are the intellectual capital, the speed to which you gain information; and context for decisions, and planning and execution. I have not found anything that comes even close. If you decide to enter into a conversation as a senior person, in at least rank, you can be globally stupid, and you can do it very quickly and if that bothers you, then you are going to have to toughen up the hide. In the military structure, that is something that is a paradigm shift. But if you can’t stand being globally stupid once in a while, this is not the space for you. – Lone Survivor: Trailer: Marcus Luttrell: Draw a Line; BizofGov: US Strategic Command: Gen James Cartwright 01.02.03.
