Subject: RE: [EXTERNAL]: Filing RI SoS: McVeigh 2020: US President Write In Candidate
To: McVeigh 2020 Exp Comm <email@example.com>, elections <firstname.lastname@example.org>, Board of Elections <email@example.com>, Director Robert Rapoza <Robert.Rapoza@elections.ri.gov>
Thank you for contacting Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea’s office.
There are currently no filing requirements for write-in candidates in Rhode Island. In order for a vote to count for a write-in candidate, a voter must write the name of the candidate on the “Write-in” line and fill in the oval to the left of the name.
There may be however, legislation introduced that would require write-in candidates to file a statement with the Secretary of State’s office by the Friday before the election indicating the candidate’s desire to be a write-in candidate. Please check back in July for a status update.
If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks.
